Medication abortion: Also known as the “abortion pill.” This pill is given up to 11 weeks. This method is done by ingesting two pills to end a pregnancy. The first pill called Mifepristone, is designed to block the hormone your body produces during pregnancy.
The second pill, Misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours after the first pill is ingested and is designed to mimic a miscarriage. This medicine causes cramping and bleeding to terminate the pregnancy. This process takes 2-3 days to complete. With this method, you may also be provided antibiotics in the event of an infection.
Abortion pill reversal (APR): With this method, after ingesting the first pill-Mifepristone, which blocks the pregnancy hormone Progesterone. APR is designed to bring a flood of that hormone back into your body to restore what the abortion pill blocked. Taking the reversal abortion pill must be done within 24 hrs. of ingesting Mifepristone for it to be effective. However, there has been successful cases from women taking it 4-5 days after ingesting Mifepristone. Time is of the essence, and many women have regretted their decision and opted to do the reversal with success. If this is the predicament you find yourself in, it may not be too late.
Surgical abortion: Most surgical abortions occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Many different methods are available depending on your stage of pregnancy. You can choose your type of pain management during the procedure. This can range from being in an altered state to being completely sedated during the procedure.
During the abortion, the cervix is dilated and a suction tube is inserted to remove the embryo along with any other material needed to help the embryo grow and thrive.
